What's all the excitement about NAD+?

NAD+, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a chemical co-factor found in all living cells. This molecule is critical for metabolism and, without it, cells would cease to function and, therefore, die. The role NAD+ plays in numerous biochemical reactions and metabolic functions is well established. In short, NAD+ functions to help every cell generate energy. It plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of DNA by promoting DNA repair. It has shown the ability to reverse the aging process in mice by promoting increased circulation. Unfortunately, though we are all born with plenty of NAD+, our levels decrease as we age, which is thought to be one of the causes of age-related decline in physical and mental functioning. As our cells lose energy, they lose the ability to repair themselves and therefore become more diseased.
