Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How many OsteoWave® sessions will I need?

A. Depending on the severity of osteoarthritis and other factors, one to three sessions will be needed to end your pain and increase your function.

Q. How long do the results last?

A. OsteoWave® initiates healing of the bone and soft tissue of the joint so it provides long-term results. The results normally last for several years but that can be extended or shortened by numerous factors such as level of activity, age, weight, and others. While engaging in strenuous, high-impact activities may shorten the period of relief, it is safe and effective to treat the joint again.

Q. Do I need need a referral from my doctor?

A. A referral from your doctor is not required for OsteoWave® although you must have a diagnosis of osteoarthritis from an MD. OsteoWave® is for mild to severe osteoarthritis so there is no need to suffer through injections or other conservative treatments first. OsteoWave can be your first and last treatment for your osteoarthritis.

Q. Does the treatment hurt?

A. For the vast majority of patients, no, but occasionally there can be some discomfort at the higher energy levels. We do several things to ensure your comfort. First, the treatment site is often numbed with a local anesthesia (field block). We also understand that you may be nervous about the procedure so we offer a fast acting sedative. During the treatment, we constantly communicate with you as the energy level is slowly increased. If it starts getting uncomfortable, we can slow the rate of increase and allow the analgesic effects of the shockwaves to set in before increasing further.

Q. Do you accept insurance?

A.Unfortunately, insurance does not normally reimburse for SWT so we are strictly self-pay, although you can use your HSA or FSA. We do offer short and long term financing through CareCredit.

Q. Who cannot be treated with OrthoWave®?

A. Most adults of any age can be treated with OsteoWave. Tumors in the joint being treated is a disqualifier and those on blood thinners or with blood clotting issues will need to receive clearance from their treating physician first. Other than that, OsteoWave® is a great alternative to invasive joint injections and risky joint replacement surgery for the vast majority of people.
